Michael Lang was the co-founder of the renowned Woodstock Festival which was first introduced in 1969 for the first time. Despite being raised in a middle-class, Jewish household in Brooklyn, New York, where he was born on December 11, 1944, Michael Lang never let anything or anyone stop him. He actually left New York University in 1967, then moved to Miami, Florida, where he opened a head shop (paraphernalia specializing retail store) after settling there.
Michael immediately started working behind the scenes at musical events and this quickly led to the great chance to organize the 1968 Pop & Underground Festival. Michael’s inspiration for a peaceful, loving, self-sufficient, and neighborhood-driven celebration came from this specific event, especially with a variety of performers on stage. He once explained,
I was amazed at the effect music had on the kids. This was a college-age, late high school-age audience,…and looking at their faces and the way music sort of transformed them really started me in that direction.
Michael Lang eventually managed to organize what can only be characterized as magic, Woodstock 1969, after moving to Woodstock, New York, the same year and by chance meeting all the right individuals.
With his partners and promoters, Michael did try to somewhat replicate the undeniable success by staging the event again in 1994, 1999, and 2019, but none of those attempts went particularly well. Due to a storm tearing down the walls and allowing attendees unrestricted entry, Woodstock ’94 was a financial disaster, while Woodstock ’99 was literally chaos with brutality, violence, and even a riot.
Michael Lang had managed to build a good life for himself despite the highs and lows of Woodstock by becoming, as mentioned above, a producer, artist manager, author, and sculptor.
In fact, he also founded the Just Sunshine Record record label in 1971 and even provided funding for several Woodstock-related documentaries, including A Bright Light, Woodstock: The Lost Performances, and Woodstock: Now & Then.
Unfortunately, after 77 years of happiness, Michael Lang passed away at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma on January 8, 2022. Michael was vocal and proud of every element of his life. His wife Tamara Pajic Lang, his two sons Harry Lang and Laszlo Lang, and his three daughters Molly Lang, LariAnn Lang, and Shala Lang Moll are all left to mourn his death.
