The couple, who met on the dating app Hinge, agreed on a whim to go to Costa Rica for their third date in March 2020, just before the pandemic put all travel on hold, according to the documentary. The two got stuck for three months in Central America. After those three months, they were permitted to go on a government-funded airplane, but they ended up in Texas and remained there for longer. They then went on a road trip to Maine, where Le met Robertson’s parents, and then to Seattle, where Robertson met Le’s parents.
The two have been together for the past three years, and they claimed that their relationship may have developed differently if they had gone on a “normal” third date. Matt said,
We would have been doing Zoom or FaceTime dates in that time. We probably would have gone our separate [ways]. It would have been hard to get that chemistry maybe. I don’t know. I think everything happens for a reason.
