How Did DB Cooper Get His Money on the Plane? Was He Able to Survive the Escape?
A man made a reservation for a flight on November 24, 1971, at Portland International Airport using the name Dan Cooper (D.B Cooper). In less than an hour, the plane was supposed to touch down at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Cooper hijacked the plane and ordered a bourbon and soda for the 36 passengers on board before passing a note to a hostess claiming to have a bomb in his briefcase. He wanted four parachutes and $200,000 in $20 bills. In today’s money, the payment would be worth more than $1.2 million, so Cooper received a significant payment at the time.
The fact that he didn’t harm a single person while becoming rich just makes his story more dramatic. Dan released the 35 passengers without difficulty when the plane landed safely in exchange for the cash and the parachutes. A few crew members remained behind, then gave the go-ahead for the aircraft to take off once more, this time heading for Mexico City with a stop in Reno, Nevada, for another refueling.
Dan delivered the order for every crew member still on board to get to the cockpit and remain there after this takeoff. Then, around 8:00 p.m., he opened the aft airstair system without the sight of a single witness. Later, somewhere between Seattle and Reno, he did the unbelievable: Dan jumped from the back of the aircraft while holding the ransom money and a parachute.
However, it wasn’t until after 10:15 p.m., after the plane had landed back safely in Reno, that the investigators were able to confirm that Dan Cooper was no longer on board, having disappeared into the night. According to the Netflix show, further ground searches for him turned out unsuccessful as well.
Did D.B. Cooper Survive the Escape? Where Is He Now?
None is absolutely sure who Dan Cooper, commonly known as D.B. Cooper, actually is, and nobody can even say with certainty whether he survived the escape or now. Nothing in terms of theory, speculation, or evidence points to a specific person.
As of now, the criminal of the lone unresolved air piracy case in commercial aviation history has never been identified and is still free. All that is known about D.B. Cooper is that he continues to be sought after by numerous people for supposedly committing the ideal crime.
After all, he made $200,000 money without physically injuring a single person, then disappeared into thin air, literally, into the night, leaving no evidence of who he was or what he did behind.
