Outer Banks: We Can Assume That Mr. Sunn Had the Diary in Season 2 Until Carlos Singh Stole It in Season 3!
Nobody finds out Denmark Tanny‘s diary until Season 3 of Outer Banks. After the copy of the diary was ruined by the rain that poured in through the open windows of John B‘s vintage Volkswagen van, the father-son duo visit Mr. Sunn, the latter’s history teacher from high school, who formerly owned the original diary. However, Carlos Singh‘s men attack them in the house and steal the original diary. Hence, it appears Mr. Sunn was the one who had the diary in Season 2.
The Outer Banks characters have been on a three-season search for the original diary of Denmark Tanny, a former slave and distant ancestor of Pope who was the only survivor of the Royal Merchant shipwreck and the only one who knew the whereabouts of its long-lost treasure. It holds clues to the exact location of the mythical city of El Dorado.
A Caribbean Don named Carlos Singh arrests Rafe and Kiara in Barbados because he thinks they know where Denmark’s diary is and gives them one day to show up the diary or die, intensifying the quest in season 3. At some point, Kie admits to Singh that she doesn’t know the whereabouts of the original diary but does know where to go for a replica.
That copy, however, was left in John B’s vintage Volkswagen van, The Twinkie, and was ruined by the rain that poured in through the open windows. Afterward, Big John and John B go to the house of Mr. Sunn, the latter’s history teacher from high school, who formerly owned the original diary. But, Singh’s men attack them there, steal the priceless original, and escape on a boat.
Big John kills the two men as the Routledge men chase the smugglers, much to John B’s horror. Yet Big John’s efforts enable them to seize Denmark’s precious diary, and they cooperate throughout the remainder of the third season as they go through the book’s numerous hints and look for lost items that ultimately lead them to El Dorado.
But when Singh kidnaps Big John and puts him on a boat to Venezuela, things become even more complicated. Sarah uses her family’s private jet to fly the group to South America in order to free Big John. Despite Singh’s men being close behind, the trio is capable of decoding all the diary’s hints and riddles and ultimately finds El Dorado, a gold-filled cave.
Before they can leave with their share of the loot, Big John is shot by Singh for standing up for his son. Before passing away, he is able to throw dynamite at the cave’s entrance, and it explodes, killing Singh and hiding the way to the treasure. As his father throws the dead victims into the ocean and hides his tracks, John watches in disbelief. The Pogues carry home their well-earned loot after burying Big John in the bush.
