Orion Kerkering’s Impressive Road to the MLB!

Orion Kerkering, who was born in Huntington Beach, California, attended the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa Bay, Florida. The young pitcher struggled while playing for the USF Bulls, compiling a record of 10-11 and an ERA of 4.79 over 129.1 innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies, on the other hand, recognized his potential and took him in the fifth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. A powerful arm out of the bullpen, Kerkering rapidly established himself after beginning the 2023 season with Low-A in Clearwater. Over the course of four different minor league levels, Kerkering’s ERA was 1.51. Over 53 2/3 innings, he only gave up nine earned runs while striking out 79 hitters.

The pitching prospect advanced swiftly through the minor league tiers, making the transition from Low-A to the MLB in just one season. He is an intriguing addition to the Phillies bullpen, thanks to his excellent fastball and sweeper as well as his 38% strikeout rate. There is confidence in Kerkering’s ability to manage pressure situations, which is why he made his big league debut now rather than in May 2024.

Kerkering pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning while striking out two batters. His first pitch in the majors was a slider at 88 mph that was caught for a strike. Rafael Ortega was hooked up for the final out after he hit a slider with an incredible 20 inches of horizontal break on his penultimate pitch.

The Phillies have given him an extended look because of his ability to command the slider in the strike zone, throw it in the upper 80s, and routinely induce batters to chase out of the zone.

Although it took Orion Kerkering only five minutes to withdraw the side, for his father Todd, it felt like an eternity. His tearful response to his son’s debut went viral on the Internet.
