Netflix‘s Outlast, which premiered on March 10, 2023, is about 16 people who are dropped into a temperate rainforest in Neka Bay, Alaska, with only the clothes on their backs. There are two main rules: you must be a part of a team to win, and you can only leave the game voluntarily or for medical reasons.
The cast members’ perseverance and skills are just as important to the success of a survival show like Netflix’s Outlast as the structure of the show itself. After all, in a competition like this, where both nature and humans are working against them, only a few people can survive.
Season 1’s Joel Hungate had a similar story, as he worked hard to be a part of the winning team. So if you are interested in learning more about his journey on the show and wonder where the reality TV star currently is. Well, we are here to help!

Talking about his journey in season 1, Joel Hungate entered the Netflix competition in the hopes of winning the million-dollar cash prize reserved for the team that outlasted everyone else. And after undergoing a months-long vetting and audition process to be selected as one of 16 alpha adventurers competing for a $1 million prize. Joel joined Delta Camp with his teammates Jordan Williams (@jordan_xx_williams), Paul Preece, and Dawn Nelson after the cast was divided. The four felt compelled to band together because the other three teams did not want them, so they were determined to prove everyone else wrong.
Delta Camp was the last team to retain all four of its original members not long after the competition began. This encouraged Joel’s team even more, as they bonded over their common interests and families. Jordan’s enthusiasm and competitive spirit kept the group going more than anything else. However, things took a turn for the worse when he collapsed due to the group’s limited food supply.
Jordan’s medical evacuation was confirmed in a handwritten letter in which he asked his teammates to stay strong and continue playing in memory of their loved ones. The message made Joel and the others cry as they mourned their teammate’s departure. Nonetheless, he and Dawn were taken aback when they discovered Paul had abandoned them and joined Charlie Camp.
Furious over the apparent betrayal, the remaining Delta Camp members confronted Paul and asked if they meant nothing to him. When Joel and Dawn discovered that the Delta Camp’s base had been robbed and their sleeping bags were missing, they suspected Joel’s new team. Soon after, the pair spotted an unknown raft on their side of the Neka river. This made them realize that the robbery had been carried out by someone from the Alpha or Bravo Camps.
Dawn gave the thief an ultimatum: come out of hiding or she would puncture the rubber tubes on their raft. She followed up, and Justin Court (@jcourt003_), who had raided the Delta Camp base, was now forced to cross the river alone. Meanwhile, Joel and Dawn made every effort to sleep without sleeping bags. The following day, they discovered that Javier Colón of the Bravo Camp was willing to collaborate with them because his last teammate, Brian Kahrs, had also left.
However, neither Alpha nor Charlie Camp was pleased with the potential alliance and decided to sabotage it. While Alpha Camp was raiding Javier’s base, Charlie Camp made certain that the Delta Camp would not find refuge on their side of the river. Joel and Dawn decided to leave the competition because they were tired of the tactics being used and were afraid of spending another night without insulation in the Alaskan wilderness.
