The youngest of four siblings, Yvonne Orji was born on December 2, 1983, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She and her family immigrated to the USA when she was six years old, where she lived her formative years in Laurel, Maryland.

After completing her high school education in Lititz, Pennsylvania, Yvonne attended George Washington University where she earned a BA in Liberal Arts and a Master’s degree in Public Health. The actress worked in post-conflict Liberia for around six months in 2008 and 2009 with the NGO Population Services International (PSI).

Yvonne started to show an interest in comedy after she graduated, but her parents weren’t convinced that she should make comedy her career. In an interview with People, she told,

We didn’t grow up with TV as a viable means of supporting yourself. [I told them] it would take me eight years to become a doctor, but give me eight years to make it in entertainment.

Yvonne Orji moved to New York in 2009 in order to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. She juggled living in both cities for over seven years before landing the role of Molly in Insecure in 2015. She won her own HBO comedy special, Momma, I Made It! in 2020, in which she discussed her challenges as a Nigerian living in America and her career trajectory.

Despite having been raised as a Catholic, Yvonne is now an orthodox Protestant. She made the decision to remain a v*rgin till marriage at the age of 17, after joining a Bible study group. Another possible reason why she isn’t pregnant.

The producers of the projects she worked on showed great consideration for her concerns about utilizing profanity, nudity, and intimate encounters on camera.
