This is why Taylor Zakhar Perez claimed he spent the entire time filming thinking about the LGBTQ+ community while attempting to appropriately portray his character’s sexuality. The actor explained,

Alex’s arc as a character who has only dated women in the past – maybe a couple of guy hook-ups – to not liking Henry, to getting kissed by Henry then having a relationship, the different degrees of comfort that [he] starts to have, this needs to be represented in a proper way. It’s up to me, because I feel like it really is Alex’s film, his journey. I felt it was up to me to make it happen.

Fans of the novel will recognize that this is more than just a love story. Alex and Henry enjoy a very healthy s*x life, according to López. The team employed an intimacy coordinator to guarantee the sex sequences were genuine. Regarding illustrating Alex and Henry‘s relationship, Perez remarked,

We were hypersensitive to making sure everything was properly represented and properly accurate, even down to the sex scenes. With our intimacy co-ordinator, those conversations were borderline funny because we were talking so seriously about a kiss.
