She is the second consecutive American champion, following Lauren Davis in 2023. Navarro was ranked No. 149 at this time last year, but the New York-born player is now No. 26. She also advanced to the semifinals in Auckland earlier this year, continuing her outstanding start to 2024, and is now 8-1 overall. Following her victory in the Hobart final, she explained that she wanted to become “a decent college player” just a few years ago. She said,

Probably six, seven years ago, I was hoping to be a decent college player and that was going to be good enough for me. So to be here now, it’s really crazy and I guess just a testament to the work we’ve both put in.

Navarro is the No. 26 seed at next week’s Australian Open, where she will face Wang Xiyu of China in her tournament debut.
