Athing Mu is an American middle-distance runner who was born on June 8, 2002. She is the youngest woman in history to have won an individual track and field event at both the Olympic and global levels.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Mu won the gold medal in the 800 meters at the age of 19, shattering both a national and a continental under-20 record set by Ajeé Wilson in 2017. Athing, the second youngest of seven children, was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey. Her family has a South Sudanese background, and her parents moved to America from that country. Athing Mu Unbeaten for 13 Games in a Row!

The last time Athing Mu was defeated in an 800-meter race was three years ago. She won the titles of American champion, Olympic champion, and world champion in distance during that time, all before turning 21. Many people, and with good reason, consider Mu to be the most intriguing athlete in track and field right now because of the remarkable start to her professional running career.

Last year, Mu became the youngest woman in history to hold both the Olympic and world titles in an individual track and field event when she defeated Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain late in the race to earn gold. With her quick rise and extraordinary success after going pro, Mu’s current state of mind regarding her previous achievements may not come as a surprise.

In an interview with CNN Sport, she told,

There’s pressure, for sure……And not only from obviously the outside world, but for myself, too, knowing that I was able to do these two things the past two years – these really big, incredible things.

Athing Mu last failed to win a race of any distance in January 2022, which was 13 races ago. She was set to compete at the Millrose Games in New York this month, but she withdrew a few days beforehand, claiming the need to concentrate on the upcoming world championships and the outdoor season.
