Zac Efron recently opened up a little bit about his life, revealing that he has been suffering from a disease named agoraphobia. The Baywatch actor talked openly about his Agoraphobia in the interview for the October 2022 cover of Men's Health. He stated:
I just don't go out. People in large groups, it triggers my agoraphobia.
For those who don't know what Agoraphobia is, it is a form of anxiety disorder in which a person fears and avoids locations or circumstances that could make them feel confined, helpless, or ashamed. You have a fear of a circumstance that is real or imagined, such as taking public transportation, being in an enclosed or open area, waiting in line, or being among a lot of people.
Fear that there is no quick method to get out or assistance if the anxiety worsens is what makes people anxious. Most sufferers of agoraphobia get it after having one or more panic episodes, which makes them fear having more attacks and steer clear of the places where they might happen.
While Efron (@zacefron) didn't go into great detail about these concerns during the interview, Men's Health noted that other famous people have also talked freely about them. Kim Basinger and Donny Osmond have both been open in the past about their problems with agoraphobia, with Osmond admitting in 2000 that there were moments when he would have chosen death over performing.
Efron talked about the well-publicized physique he developed for the 2017 film Baywatch, telling readers he's unsure if "that's really attainable" given the extensive preparation and regimen he undertook to achieve it. He explained,
There's just too little water in the skin. Like, it's fake; it looks CGI'd. And that required Lasix, powerful diuretics, to achieve. So I don't need to do that. I much prefer to have an extra, you know, 2 to 3 percent body fat.
The actor told the journal that in order to stay in shape for filming, he frequently had to skip sleep, overexert himself, and consume the same three meals every day. He now wants to draw attention to the hardships he endured while getting that body as well as the negative side effects that persisted after the filming. He remarked,
I started to develop insomnia and I fell into a pretty bad depression, for a long time. Something about that experience burned me out. I had a really hard time recentering. Ultimately, they chalked it up to taking way too many diuretics for way too long, and it messed something up.
