Ferry Bouman Real Story: Who Is the Netflix Series Based On?

Ferry Bouman from the Netflix Ferry series & movie is based on the real story of Janus van Wessenbeeck, a ferocious drug lord from the Netherlands.

Following the success of the Dutch crime drama series Undercover, Netflix released a prequel film titled Ferry in 2021, which merely provided a backstory on the show's major character, Ferry Bouman.

Now, in 2023, the streaming site has released Ferry: The Series, a sequel series to the film that provides an even deeper insight into the legendary Ferry Bouman as shown in Undercover. Following the events of the 2021 film, in which Ferry killed his former boss Brink solely for the sake of his lover Danielle, the new series follows the man's deeds in Brabant, which soon propel him to the region's biggest ecstasy kingpin.

Now that most people know that the character of Ferry Bouman is based on a crime boss Janus van Wessenbeeck, many people want to know the real story of Janus van. Well, we've got you covered.

The Real Story of Ferry Bouman: Who Is the Netflix Series Based On?

Ferry Bouman from the Ferry franchise on Netflix is based on Janus van Wessenbeeck, a cruel and dreaded drug lord from the Netherlands. But what is his real story? Is it similar to Ferry from the Netflix movie & series? Well!

Janus van Wesenbeeck was renowned in the real world for his links in the drug trade, and he gained the nickname "Harry Potter" supposedly owing to his appearance when wearing spectacles. Janus was eventually brought to justice for his drug trafficking business and was sentenced to fourteen years in jail in 2011.

Janus was born in Eindhoven and would frequently operate out of Belgium, smuggling ecstasy, amphetamines, and hashish. The crime lord had been under investigation for over a decade and was discovered to be importing drugs worth millions of Euros to Australia.

According to the NL Times, Janus was arrested in the early 1990s while attempting to smuggle 865,000 ecstasy tablets for 34 million Euros. The real-life Ferry Bouman has been arrested on several occasions in Belgium, the most recent being in 2011 when he was found importing a large amount of hashish and amphetamine. He was also sentenced to ten years in prison in Belgium for managing a huge criminal organization.

However, he was granted early release from prison in 2015 after a successful appeal on the condition that he would not return to Belgium. As of now, we're not sure of his whereabouts but he has not made headlines since being released in 2015. As of now, he must be in his 60s.

Ferry: The Series Season 2 Update!

Ferry: The Series has not been renewed for a second season as of this writing. Of course, the series is still in its early stages, and Netflix will be waiting for all of the data before considering another season. However, there may be a more obvious solution at the heart of the problem.

With Ferry: The Series delving into the character's background, it's possible that the story that the show's makers wanted to tell has come to a natural conclusion, and no further material is required.

The show was promoted as a miniseries that would bridge the gap between Ferry and Undercover. With the latter's fans being the primary driver of engagement in what is otherwise a fairly obscure franchise, if the spin-off has practically caught up to the flagship series, then... things have to come to an end eventually.

It's also worth noting that Undercover was not a particularly successful Netflix series, but it did appear to improve over time, with the third season getting into the top ten in 23 countries, according to Netflix Top 10. However, like past seasons, it only lasted a week, hinting that the cosmos as a whole does not have a long lifespan. Ferry: The Series, as a predecessor to this series, is unlikely to outperform it.
