The whole world is currently mourning over the death of Matthew Perry. The 54-year-old actor who made us laugh with his character as Chandler Bing in the popular NBC series, Friends, was announced dead on Saturday. While he was found unconscious in the bathtub at his home, the cause of his death has yet to be confirmed.
Last year, Matthew released his memoir titled Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing where he revealed a lot of his personal information, including his battle with addiction and suffering an eating disorder. As per His Memoir, Matthew Perry’s Scars Served as a Reminder for Him to Stay Sober!
Even though his scars were not visible to the public as they were on his stomach, Matthew Perry wrote in his memoir that his scars reminded him to stay sober. Following his addiction to Vicodin, he was eventually into alcohol abuse in 2000 and suffered from pancreatitis.

In the memoir, he revealed that he received an emergency ostomy surgery after he went into a coma for two weeks. That was one of the surgeries that left a scar on his stomach. He had 14 surgeries in total due to different reasons, including to repair a gastrointestinal perforation in 2018. He wrote,
That’s a lot of reminders to stay sober. All I have to do is look down.
Later, Matthew Perry recalled,
My therapist said, ‘The next time you think about taking Oxycontin, just think about having a colostomy bag for the rest of your life. And a little window opened and I crawled through it and I no longer want Oxycontin anymore.
Clearly, Matthew Perry’s scars helped him a lot to stay sober.
