Stephen apparently got an interest in nature and travel as a boy living up on Ireland’s West Coast. The fact is that a David Attenborough documentary sparked his interest in snorkeling with his father and collected National Geographic paper magazines. Then began his never-ending questions about what, why, how, when, where, and so on, based on the areas/elements surrounding him, according to his father, indicating his desire to be a globe explorer.

However, everything changed for Stephen throughout his teenage years when his father departed and his mother was afflicted with cancer, causing him to gain an altogether new viewpoint. He clearly understood he didn’t want to remain, settle down, or live a traditional life, but he willingly stayed after graduation for his mother because they’d always been quite close.

Her untimely death eventually prompted him to stretch his wings, especially because his mindset had evolved into “live for today, for you never know what comes down the line,” according to the Netflix original. As a result, Stephen went to his first fantasy location in Africa, Congo, Africa, followed by Ethiopia, Guinea, Nigeria, Sudan, and Sierra Leone, among others, in quest of a destiny he didn’t completely comprehend.

Stephen Keenan was a selfless hero in every meaning of the word, which is why he was eventually chosen Chief of Security for the 2017 Vertical Blue tournament in The Bahamas. That’s when Stephen met Alessia Zecchini (@alessia.zecchini), an unwaveringly dedicated yet fiery Italian athlete, and ended up spending practically every day with her as a safety teacher.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that he was present when she broke Natalia Molchanov’s long-standing world record of 101 meters, only to break it again a few days later to reach 104 meters.

According to the Netflix documentary, Alessia Zecchini tried this complicated dive on July 22, 2017, after multiple attempts with Stephen Keenan, who had intended to meet her at a safety line at the ascent point. But, sadly, everything that might go wrong did – while she finished her swim 10 seconds earlier, he swam to meet her 20 seconds later than planned because his pulse was racing too fast for a safe breath hold.

The couple so missed each other by 30 seconds, by which time the former had already paddled out into the vast blue darkness in pursuit of the rope, prompting her admirer to race after her.

When Stephen finally reached Alessia, he was seemingly out of the air, fatigued, and on the verge of passing out, but he seized both her hands and pushed her to the surface. That’s where they both passed out, but the difference was that she was face-up while he was not, and no one else was there to aid right away – simply seconds could’ve made a difference.
