Toji’s clan, the Zenin clan, abused him even while he was a child since he was born into the family without any cursed energy. His family always saw him as a stain on the clan’s reputation. His family mistreated him horribly and shunned him because they thought he was beneath them.
Toji received the short end of the stick even as a child. He was thrown headfirst into a pit of evil, cursed spirits by the Zenins. During the event, he acquired his recognizable face scar while fending off ghosts and barely escaping with his life.

The clan hoped the curses would leave him so they wouldn’t have to deal with the “shame” any longer. As Toji grew older, the clan’s treatment of him became more and more harsh. They were so terrified of his wild heavenly restriction skills that they attempted to subdue him further.
